Age: the most trustworthy line in whois
A domain's age is computed from the whois creation date, and it cannot be faked: registry dates cannot be backdated. Age matters in two places: trust assessment (most fraud sites are weeks old; a day-old domain imitating an established service is the strongest red flag) and aftermarket value (a long-registered name carries history and recognition).
What sets the value
Four things roughly set a domain's market price: length (3-5 letters are rare), extension (.com is still king; trend extensions like .ai carry period premiums), word value (a real, searched-for word) and age/history. Does domain age affect SEO?
Google says age alone is not a ranking factor; but an old domain usually carries accumulated links and content history — the indirect effect is real. An old name with zero history is no better than a new one.
Can I see a domain's previous owners?
Whois shows the current state only; for history, whois-archive services and the Wayback Machine (the site's old content) are used together. Checking this before buying a name with possible spam history is essential.
